Your web site is made up of pages which have been coded in HTML. These pages are then interpreted by your browser and presented on your screen. HTML elements consist of text information, images, CSS styles, backgrounds, colors etc. Each of these pages is linked through hypertext or image links to other pages, either within the same site or through outbound links to external web sites. This is the 'structure' of your web site.
It is imperative that your web pages have been designed with a clean structure so that the search engine Bots can index and rank them properly. The technical elements of your site can make it either easier or more difficult for search engines to "understand" what the page is about. The more "understandable" your page is to search engines, the more likely your site will be properly indexed and rank well.
Pay careful attention to the following: poor insite link structure, (ie: dead links), unnecessary use of javascript and "cool" Flash movies. Whiz-bang Java and funky flash will kill your SEO efforts faster than your competition's skillfully designed web site ever will.
Remember: Content is King. Make sure you've got quality content that is updated regularly (once a week). Lack of text (content) is probably the biggest detriment to search engines being able to understand what your web site is about. It's also the number one overlooked aspect of quality site design: Content beats outstanding, visual effects and glamour every time. Case in point: Search engine Bots can't see..., but they sure can read :-)
